Web site promotion

How to get your website listed in directories.

Promoting your web site

Getting listed -take this gradually, don't be impatient for results, and especially don't annoy people with repeat requests. Search engines take time to register your site -if you are lucky it might appear in two weeks, but it could also take anything up to six months.

Other sites linking to your site -start simply. by looking for related sites and then ask for a link to your site. The aim is to get as many sites as possible pointing to you. Try:
Local business directories
Sites about your town/county
Trade directories on your subject and similar areas
Post notices on bulletin boards that allow you to include your URL (only related boards or your notice will almost certainly be deleted). Don't just post adverts -join in and add meaningful content -your message is more likely to be read this way, and the link followed.

Links page -as I said before, you should have a page of related links. This adds value to your site, and allows you to add reciprocal links with similar sites. You will gain direct traffic and increase your rating on some search engines, especially Google. However trying to avoid calling it a 'links page' -make it look and feel an integral part of your site. Also do make sure your links are on-topic -search engines tend to lower the ranking of sites that link to unrelated sites.

You will build up your profile over a period of time, and the process isnever ending -remain inactive and you will find your site traffic eventually drops.
