Let's start with your web address
(URL). Do not use a free homepage address. They simply do not
give the right message and you will not find it as easy to get
listed as sites with a proper address. Similarly do not buy a
domain name and point it at your free personal webpage -you need
a full domain address for every page in the site, or they may
not get listed by the search engines.
Use .com if you are marketing
worldwide, and and local address such as .co.uk if your market
is in the UK only (likewise with .au for Australia and .ca for
Canada etc). You can expect more visitors with a dot com address
but a higher proportion will be UK based with .co.uk -try to
decide where you intended audience is located. Don't forget other
variants such as .net and .org.
Name: Use your subject in the
name if possible -for example the best address on architecture
is www.architecture.com.
Make it memorable too -unusual names or words are easily remembered
by visitors who may wish to come back. If your chosen name is
taken, then try to make a name by combining two words or adding
'the' in front of it, or you can combine a number of keywords,
such as with this site www.DIY-web-promotion.co.uk
.
If your business has a strong
product identity, or is sensitive to the efforts of rivals, then
you may wish to buy related web addresses. For example it is
no use owning the address www.bluewidgits.co.uk if your rival
can go out and buy www.bluewidgits.com or www.bluewidgits.net.
