Web directories

Getting listed in UK relevant directories.

Directories -where to get listed

Get registered in the major directories in the most appropriate categories. There are two you should consider above all others:

  • Yahoo -choice of http://www.Yahoo.com or by country, such as http://www.Yahoo.co.uk -difficult to get in unless you have a site of major interest -don't try for too ambitious a category -it may be easier to get specialised sites listed in specific area. You may have to pay to be listed in some commercial sections of Yahoo.
  • The Open Directory - http://www.dmoz.com -very important as it is edited on a voluntary basis. A number of search engines use it as a starting point and rank listed pages higher (in particular Google). UK sites should be listed in the regional section of the directory. Beware, they are likely to penalise people who repeatedly ask for more than one listing. If you are interested, you could also offer to volunteer as an editor in your subject area. UK directory at: http://www.dmoz.com/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom.
  • You can find guidelines on submiting for the Open Directory at http://www.laisha.com/zine/odpsubmit.html
