Content -the only way
to really attract visitors to your site is to make it content
rich. It needs to contain something people want to read or see.
This might be words or images, but whatever your web site is
about, it must have something that interests your visitors, and
it must have enough material to hold their attention. This doesn't
mean you have to prepare a fifty page website -some of the most
useful specialised sites have only one or two pages -this depends
on your subject matter.
Home page -this is the one where
most visitors find you -it ranks higher on search engines than
your other pages, so should contain a reasonable amount of text
content, including your key words. Try also to include the type
of content that might be useful to visitors, and persuade editors
of directories that your site is worth including. For example
solicitors might include case studies, guidance notes and links
to statutory legislation.
Other pages -I suggest depth
of a site should be no more than 3 levels. If the site is simple
then keep it no more than one level deep from home page. Try
to have up to five, second-level pages with good text content
(up to 500 words) on complimentary themes that support the main
page.
An example of this might be:
Home page: "A guide to health and safety in the UK"
Second level might include:
"UK health safety legislation"
"Case studies and guidance notes"
"Books and publications on health and safety"
Content generally -try to include:
1. Subject
2. Location (country, region, town)
3. Other keywords and areas of interest
4. Common misspellings (for example if you had a page on landscape
design you might include the mis-spelling lanscape.
Why not also include some unusual,
possibly invented, words in your site so you can test later how
it performs in search engines.
Links page -include a page of
links to other useful related sites -you can start with government
legislation, local business directories and sites related to
your geographical area. You can then use this as a place for
reciprocal links -more of this later. See the links page of this
site for an example of this.
