Buying an established website

How to buy an established website

Buying and Selling Websites
There are a number of places on the market dealing in established websites. Buying one can be a good way of achieving a highly ranked site very rapidly. However there are pitfalls so you need to do some very thorough research (the same goes for selling a site too).

There are rules of thumb for valuing a site, generally based on factors such as traffic and income, but the real test is what is it actually worth to the seller. Be cautious about traffic figures -traffic can be acquired in a number of ways, including paying for it. The best profile would be a variety of traffic from Google, MSN or Yahoo, interspered with people arriving through direct entry or bookmarked links. Repat visitors are the highest value. Do check the websites traffic ranking at www.alexa.com. When buying a site, ask yourself whether you will be reliant on the existing owner -if so are they prepared to commit to helping you?

One common scam is to sell websites with the same content over and over. There is a simple answer to this -try putting a phrase or two from the website in the google search box within quotation marks and see what comes up -you will soon see any duplicates.
